By now you should be familiar with the 19 billion dollar Facebook acquisition of WhatsApp. Facebook has a poor record when it comes to online privacy. Many under the hood changes in the privacy settings and flawed third party applications have certainly not helped their cause.
This deal gives Facebook access to 450 million users. WhatsApp also had issues with privacy. They were found harvesting personal contact details from contact lists of its users, even of those who weren’t WhatsApp users.
Now if all this just makes you a bit paronoid about security and privacy, there are two instant messaging applications I have come across on the android platform .
The first one is TextSecure from https://whispersystems.org/
The second one is Telegram https://telegram.org/
Both applications are free in the Google play store and are very simple to setup and use. What they offer that instant messaging from WeChat, Skype, Line & Viber do not have is encryption. Now if only you could get all your contacts on these apps.
